How to Design Your Office
Before we answer the question of how to design your office, we need to define what an office is. After all, just as the expression “National Office Furniture” sounds fairly generic, so is the concept of an office. An office can be a small room in your home from where you actually work, or a small, private room that is used for business-related work even if your actual livelihood is earned elsewhere. On the other hand, an office can be a huge room partitioned off into sections, rather like a national newspaper headquarters or a factory. Some offices are large and impersonal, while others are small and intimate. A lot depends on the number of people using it and whether members of the public are allowed in or out.
When you are designing your own office, there are two main factors that have to be taken into account: efficiency and aesthetics. On the one hand, you need your office to be the best place for yourself and your employees to work in. There needs to be enough computers and office equipment so that the job can be done. The chairs should be comfortable and the desks wide enough to accommodate everyone’s needs. There should be enough space to store stationery and other reserves. But on the other hand, the room should also be pleasing to the eye. After all, office workers need to feel comfortable with where they are. If they feel low and depressed by their surroundings, this will affect the standard of their work and their loyalty to the company.
Similarly, if your office is open to the public, you want your clients to feel impressed when they walk in. Remember that in the business world, first impressions are everything. Therefore, if a potential client walks in and thinks, “What a miserable looking old dump!” he will probably go elsewhere. At the same time, even if the office looks magnificent, if the atmosphere is not welcoming he will also take his business somewhere else. The office needs to look impressive on the one hand and reassuring on the other, so that your clients will see that you are a respectable operation and they will also feel safe and secure using your services.
If you have a flair for interior design, you can probably plan the layout of your office by yourself. But if you are not so gifted or you don’t have time to sit down and work it out, you are probably best advised to work with an office fitout company. When you choose one, you should take the following into account: – How much they charge for their services – How much of a budget you have available – How long they say the work will take – If the company has good references, and if you are able to go and see some of the offices that they have designed – When you have chosen the company you want to use, make sure that you have a precise, written contract between you.
