i saw a documentary on the history of coffee once and it didnt really become a widespread drink until early 20th century. innovations in coffee brewing, namely urns and other brewers that could be used in the home, let to coffee becoming more accessible and available. also, the advent of instant coffee during the great war and after helped spread its popularity. so following this history of coffee you can see why coffee tables dont exist much before the 1920s.
It would have been as late as the fifties.Coffee tables were made to compliment two and three seater couches. The length of the coffee table matching the length of the sofa. I remember buying a coffee table after we got married in 1959.The height also about same height as seat on couch.Of course nowadays they come in all shapes and sizes. I saw a really neat round one with drawer space and built-in magazine rack. But as you say, not too great for putting cups on.
