2011 Planting to Harvesting #28: Oh Nannyberry, Dear Nannyberry

9/25/11

Oh Nannyberry, dear Nannyberry, what do you taste like, my little treasure?

I planted my first Nannyberry bush in 2007 and it has been a long wait to taste the fruit. The information found online simply said, “bland”. What did that mean? Tasteless? Hmmm.. the wait was agonizing.

The berries have been turning colour this week and I’ve been nibbling. On my first bite (I shouldn’t really said bite as it is more of a “pop” due to the size) I knew exactly what the flavour was and the word “bland” didn’t come to mind, although that does work, I guess.

Oh darn.. I should have taken a photo of the ripened fruit… I’ll go out later to do that if I can find any more that have changed colour.

So have I built up the anticipation enough? Are you dying with curiosity? What did the nannyberries taste like?

Well, it’s interesting because I brought in three berries for Rick to try. I made note that online it was described as “bland” and I gave him warning that there was a seed inside that resembled a watermelon seed in size, shape, and colour. He ate the berries and sat in bewilderment as to how to describe the flavour. When I told him what I thought, his immediate response was a resounding “yes”!!!

And so, you ask, perhaps with a wee bit of frustration, what is the flavour of a nannyberry. Well, it taste exactly like a banana, in my opinion and in Rick’s. For heaven’s sake. It wasn’t that difficult.

So next year, when the bush is full of berries and if I take the ridiculous amount of time to remove the seeds I could make a banana loaf using my nannyberries. This is intriguing because I wondered what I’d do when we could no longer afford transporting bananas to Canada. (They are currently almost 90 cents a pound on a normal shopping day.. Yikes.

My next question is: “What are the nutritional values of the nannyberry?” But that is another mystery. Right now I am thrilled that I resolved the issue about what they taste like.
